Lecture: “Architecture and Resonance with the Cosmos” with Simon Koumjian III2015-10-16T12:24:02-04:00
The cosmos is typically considered far above Earth, away from our everyday experiences. This exhibition conveys the architecture and resonance of the cosmos on Earth. The ideas behind this exhibition arose out of: (a) efforts to restore our connection to Earth and the vibrations of sound, light, and the ambience of the cosmos; (b) the research of compression-only masonry vaulting building techniques to find new expressive structural form in a uniquely sustainable building system; and (c) ambitions to bridge Native American and contemporary cosmology, specifically how these ancient cultures interpreted their place on Earth into cosmological dwelling expressions.
Architecture in Resonance with the Cosmos highlights the interdisciplinary research project of the Oculi Sound Chamber Dwelling and earthwork design to be built on an18.4-acre lot located in southeast Utah. The installation will feature drawings, renderings, video, and a selection of digital and hand-crafted models by architect Simon Koumjian III, in collaboration with other designers, including students at FIU.
